THE RHYTHM OF HER • The science + soul of the female cycle • The Follicular Phase
SoulSpring Wellness Journal™
Volume 02 · Issue 02
The menstrual cycle is a conversation between hormones, body, mind and emotion.
Each phase carries its own rhythm.
This week, we’re moving into the follicular phase, focusing on the days following menstruation, when energy begins to return and the body prepares for ovulation.
The follicular phase actually begins on Day 1 of your period and continues until ovulation. In this series, menstruation has its own space, so we’re focusing here on the post-menstrual portion of the follicular phase.
This is often a time of emergence.
A return to movement.
A little more light.
THE PHASE
The follicular phase begins with menstruation and continues until ovulation.
After your period ends, the body enters a period of rebuilding and preparation. Ovarian follicles continue developing, the uterine lining begins rebuilding and estrogen gradually rises.
You may notice your own energy beginning to shift with it.
THE HORMONES
During this phase, follicle stimulating hormone, or FSH, stimulates follicles in the ovaries to develop.
One follicle typically becomes dominant and continues maturing toward ovulation.
As the follicle develops, estrogen rises.
Estrogen supports rebuilding the uterine lining and also interacts with systems throughout the body, including the brain and digestive tract.
This hormonal shift can influence how you feel physically and emotionally.
BODY LITERACY
This is where you begin learning your own patterns.
As estrogen rises, you may notice:
• Increasing energy
• Greater mental clarity
• Improved or lighter mood
• More motivation
• Increased interest in movement
• Greater social energy
• More creativity
• A growing sense of confidence
• Increasing libido
• Changes in cervical mucus as ovulation approaches
Emotionally, you may feel more outward-facing.
You might want to make plans, connect with friends, start something new, create, organize, exercise or spend more time outside.
You may simply feel more like yourself.
Or you may not notice much of a change.
There is no single experience of the follicular phase, especially as hormones become less predictable during perimenopause.
The goal is not to match a textbook.
The goal is to notice your rhythm.
THE DIGESTIVE CONNECTION
Your digestive system responds to hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle.
Estrogen and progesterone can influence gastrointestinal function, fluid balance and bowel habits.
During the post-menstrual portion of the follicular phase, you may notice changes in bloating, appetite, bowel regularity or abdominal comfort.
Maybe elimination feels easier.
Maybe bloating has decreased.
Maybe your appetite has shifted.
Maybe nothing feels different at all.
Begin noticing without judging.
Your digestion is information.
COLONIC MAINTENANCE
The days following your period can be a beautiful time to reconnect with your body.
Your bleed has ended. Energy may be returning. Estrogen is rising. You may feel ready to move, nourish yourself and return to your usual rhythm.
For many women, the post-menstrual portion of the follicular phase can be an especially comfortable time to schedule a colonic.
At SoulSpring Oasis in Thousand Oaks, California, we view this window as an opportunity to support hydration, movement, nourishment and healthy elimination as you move into the next phase of your cycle.
Your individual experience matters.
Your bowel habits, hydration, digestive symptoms, comfort and overall wellness routine all play a role in determining what timing feels right for you.
Think of it as a reset point in your monthly rhythm.
A moment to pause, replenish and support your body’s natural elimination process.
THE LUNAR RHYTHM
THE FOLLICULAR PHASE + THE WAXING MOON
The follicular phase carries an energy of rising.
This beautifully mirrors the waxing moon, when the moon moves from new toward full.
Both offer a visual language of growth, emergence and increasing light.
As estrogen rises and your body moves toward ovulation, you may feel more motivated to move forward, connect, create and begin.
Use this phase as an invitation to ask:
What am I ready to grow?
What wants my attention?
What am I ready to begin?
The moon does not dictate your menstrual cycle, and your period does not need to align with a particular moon phase.
The lunar rhythm is simply another way to observe cycles, change and renewal.
Your body has its own rhythm.
The moon gives us another way to witness it.
YOUR SOULSPRING RITUAL
THE RISING RITUAL
Give yourself a little room to come back into motion.
Take a morning walk.
Drink a full glass of water before your coffee.
Get outside and feel the sun on your skin.
Move your body in a way that feels good.
Then take five quiet minutes with your journal.
Write:
What is beginning to awaken in me?
What am I ready to create?
Where do I want to place my energy this month?
You don’t need to have all the answers.
Simply notice what is beginning to rise.
SCIENCE + SOUL
Your hormones are communicating with your body every day.
Science gives us a language for understanding those changes.
Soul gives us space to experience them.
The follicular phase reminds us that growth does not always arrive with a dramatic announcement.
Sometimes it is subtle.
A little more energy.
A clearer thought.
A desire to go somewhere.
A new idea.
A deeper breath.
A feeling that something inside you is beginning to move again.
Pay attention.
SOMETHING TO NOTICE THIS WEEK
Notice what begins to return.
Your energy.
Your curiosity.
Your creativity.
Your desire to connect.
Your motivation.
Your appetite.
Your libido.
Your ease of elimination.
Keep a note in your phone or journal.
You may begin to recognize your own pattern.
